Parenting Pearls
Some parents are seeking input to improve their parenting skills. Some don't know they need parenting help. Some parents don't care. They figure their job is to feed, house and clothe their kids, and the teachers should do the rest. This blog is for all of these parents. We also want the thoughts and input from parents who feel they are doing, or have done the parenting job correctly, also those who struggle with the parenting opportunity.

Setting a Good Example
How important is setting a good example for a child?
Does it really matter if we say one thing and do another?
Does it really matter if we say one thing and do another?
After all, they are children, and we are adults. Surely they know
that as children, they have different rules than grownups.
that as children, they have different rules than grownups.
They know that grownups drive cars, and they don’t.
Grownups can smoke cigarettes, and they can’t. Adults tell lies and they had better not.

Based on the above examples, is it really that important for parents to model every single
behavior they require of their children? Don’t children between the ages of 4 and 12 generally
recognize that the rules for parents are different from their rules?

So what is the big deal? What's your opinion?

Detroit Flanagan
How can parents instill in their children a desire, a thirst for knowledge? As a recently retired teacher, I have worked with hundreds of high school students who have shown little or no desire to learn about the wondrous world in which they live. My goal is to make this Blog (Parenting Pearls) a repository of specific ideas, from multiple sources, to give parents solid options for raising motivated, well-adjusted, self-confident children.
The link below will take you to a great article about ways to cultivate and nurture curiosity in our children. Enjoy! And please give me your thoughts about the article. Was it of value? Thanks.

Poem - Advice To A Daughter
I promised one of my followers to post this poem this week. So Libby, here it is.
This is one of my favorite poems. I wrote and published it in 1994 in my book, "Women & Simple Truths."
It contains 32 pithy poems on various aspects of life for all ages. It gets a PG rating. My attitude is that anything that isn't good for kids, isn't good for adults either. Now you know where I stand.
I tried to encapsulate the gist of what most parents want their children to understand. What do you think? Is this good advice? Please share your thoughts. Thanks.
Advice To A Daughter
To my precious daughter
I have some things to say
I know you may not listen
But I’ll say them anyway
The world is full of people
With ideas of every kind
Some ideas will help you
Some put you in a bind
Some ideas can set you back
And cause a little pain
Some can devastate your life
I’m talking to you plain
The challenge for you, daughter
Is to differentiate
To tell ideas to cling to
From ideas to hate
The choices won’t be easy
But still you’ll have to choose
Just follow your own conscience
And you will seldom lose
Don’t follow your friends wishes
It’s your life that’s at stake
You be the one to choose the path
You say which road you’ll take
I’ll try to live good values
Since more is caught than taught
So when you have tough choices
You’ll do the things you ought
That’s it in a nutshell
No soapbox will I mount
Enjoy your life, learn all you can
And please make your life count

Detroit Flanagan
THANK YOU, LIBBY, FOR YOUR POINT-ON COMMENTS. I WOULD SAY THIS TO ANY PARENTS WHO MIGHT BE INTIMIDATED BY THE CALL TO “EQUIP OURSELVES TO DO THE PARENTING JOB WELL…” THERE ARE MANY, MANY PARENTS WHO ARE DOING A VERY GOOD PARENTING JOB WHILE GETTING THEMSELVES TOGETHER. HERE ARE FOUR THINGS ANY PARENT CAN DO: 1) SHOW KINDNESS, LOVE AND RESPECT FOR THEIR CHILD 2) SAY “I LOVE YOU” EVERYDAY 3) HUG THEM EVERYDAY 4) BE SOMEONE THEY CAN LOOK TO FOR ENCOURAGEMENT AND UNDERSTANDING 5) SHOW INTEREST IN THEIR SCHOOL ACTIVITIES BY KNOWING THEIR TEACHERS, ASKING ABOUT THEIR HOMEWORK AND BY ALLOWING TIME EVERYDAY FOR THEM TO DO THEIR SCHOOL ASSIGNMENTS.
ALL OF THESE CAN BE DONE BY ANY PARENT WHO WANTS TO CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH THEIR CHILDREN CAN GROW.
LIBBY, YOUR DAUGHTERS ARE VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE A MOM WHO IS AWARE OF THE AWESOME POWER OF A GOOD EXAMPLE. LATER THIS WEEK I WILL POST ONE OF THE POEMS IN MY BOOK “WOMEN & SIMPLE TRUTHS”, CALLED “ADVICE TO A DAUGTHER”. IT IS MY FAVORITE. I THINK YOU WILL LIKE IT.
